Although the debate between nurture and nature is still raging on, there are some studies that point to the idea that we are not all born tabula rasa. As Bobby McFerrin jumps around the stage, the audience sings back to him in notes according to where his new position on stage is. Note how the audience knows what note to sing, even if McFerrin had not explicitly sung them that note!
“Regardless of where I am, anywhere, every audience gets [the Pentatonic Scale] for some reason,” says McFerrin. His bunny hops all over the stage demonstrate what he is trying to convey, albeit perhaps subtlety; music is universal and intrinsic. What are your thoughts- do you think music is universal and is hidden knowledge in everyone?
